Australia marked a milestone this week when it received nearly two million litres of unblended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), the largest commercial importation of SAF it had ever received.
The fuel was imported by Australian petroleum company Ampol from Malaysia to its facility in Kurnell, New South Wales on May 7, 2025.
The SAF is currently being blended with conventional aviation fuel before testing and certification so that it can be distributed into the supply chain of Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD). It will then be used on flights departing from Sydney Airport over the coming weeks.
Once blended at a ratio of approximately 18%, Qantas and Sydney Airport said the fuel could power the equivalent of 900 flights from SYD Airport to Auckland Airport (AKL) on Qantas and Jetstar’s Boeing 737 aircraft. This would reduce the resulting carbon emissions from those flights by a total estimated 3,400 tons.
The estimated reduction is roughly equivalent to the annual emissions generated by 800 cars, Qantas said…
